King Post Wall Install at Leeds
Yorkshire Homes awarded Aarsleff Ground Engineering the contract at Farnley Park in Leeds to install 22.5 L/M of King Post Wall for a small housing site. Aarsleff deployed its Klemm 806 to pre-drill the sandstone down to a depth of 4m to ease installation of the 254 x 254 x 132 Universal columns. Aarsleff installed 10 No steel columns with a 23t excavator and then slotted in the precast concrete interlocking panels to retain approximately 2.5m of the embankment.
King Post Walls are constructed from soldier piles (usually made of steel sections, e.g. double T-beams which are driven, vibrated or mounted in a previously drilled hole filled with concrete) and laggings (usually wooden or precast concrete panels) installed between the piles during excavation. King Post Walls are effective for excavation protection, provided that:
- Ground water level is located closer to the bottom of excavation, and
- In close proximity there are no facilities prone to settlement.
Upon being used as temporary excavation protection, the elements of a King Post Wall may be partially recovered (driven or vibrated steel piles) and partially permanent (drilled piles and timber lagging).
