Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor, Tyne and Wear

Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor Project

Our Role: Retaining Wall Contractor
Location: Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, UK

In July 2019, Aarsleff was appointed to deliver a geotechnical works package as part of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor project on behalf of Client Sunderland City Council to to create space for the highway between the Pallion Shipyard and the upper existing highway and Tyne & Wear metro line. It consisted a 85m of contiguous bored pile retaining wall, 65lm retaining wall founded on CFA piles, a 250m long x 12m high soil nail wall and a large king post retaining wall encapsulating the existing 10m high retained wall pinned with ground anchors.

Welford Road, Northamptonshire

Location: Northampton, Northamptonshire, UK

In September 2023, Aarsleff installed a 79.2 metre open bore king post wall in Northampton. It was constructed to retain up to 2.2m using an open bore method, which utilises 600mm diameter boreholes to found the posts for the wall. Upon arrival to the site, Aarsleff discovered a number of live services. Our team quickly adjusted and refined the design to suit with minimal effects on the cost and programme. The project took 20 working days to complete.

Newark Welcome Break, Nottinghamshire

Our Role: Retaining Wall Contractor
Location: Newark, Nottinghamshire, UK

In January 2023, Aarsleff constructed a 150 l.m of sheet pile retaining wall, which was designed in-house. We also designed localised bespoke
buttress walls and waling beam system within the main conventional sheet pile wall in order to bridge an existing sewer. The solution appears neat from the bank side and ensures there is no disruption to the existing civil infrastructure of the road.

Gibraltar Rock, Tyne and Wear

Our Role: Main Retaining Wall Contractor
Location: King Edwards Bay, Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear, UK

Between October 20129 and January 2020, Aarsleff were one of 8 contractors appointed by North Tyneside Council to provide a geotechnical solution to the failed cliff face. Acting as the main contractor and scheme designer, Aarsleff provided a two-staged solution to develop a scheme design that would provide a 120-year design life in remediating the failed slope.

Stage 1 consisted of ground investigation works including trial pits to determine the nature of the cliff failure. Stage 2 required the installation of a contiguous piled wall, 10m in depth and 300mm in diameter, secured with a capping beam. In addition, we installed 3m long rock bolts, a gabion basket wall within the voided area and shotcrete to the new face of the wall.

Jewsons, Derbyshire

Location: Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK

Between May and June 2021, Aarsleff were sub-contracted to assist with slope stabilisation and construct a king post retaining wall solution to enable the formation of a commercial unit and service yard. Using Aarsleff’s LB24 rig, the wall was installed top-down. The LB24 Junttan rig drilled/augured to the design toe depth before king post columns were placed in open piles using a crane. The piles were concreted to the top for maximum stabilisation. The height of the retained wall varied from 2.45 to 4.64m, with a total wall length reaching 122 l/m, which was designed by Aarsleff’s in-house design team.

Birtley Phase 3, Tyne and Wear

Location: Birtley, Tyne and Wear, UK

Between March and April 2023, Aarsleff installed a 33.5m king post wall, retaining up to 3.7m, at the top of the Birtley development in order to allow excavation for gardens and house foundations to take place. Aarsleff collaborated with MGF provide a temporary panel design that would allow for the king post solution to be installed. MGF KKD 600/8mm trench sheets were used in a horizontal application. The sheets were overlapped and welded to the king post sections.

Birmingham Erdington, West Midlands

Our Role: Retaining Wall Contractor
Location: Erdington, Birmingham, West Midlands, UK

In July 2023, Aarsleff implement a scheme to replace a failed timber retaining wall on a site in Erdington. Our design engineers carried out slope stability analysis and designed a 73l/m king post wall with reinforced concrete panels to ensure site stability and bridge across live services.

Derwent Street, Derbyshire

Our Role: Retaining Wall Contractor
Location: Belper, Derbyshire, UK

Between December 2022 and January 2023, Aarsleff were contracted to design and install a 135m long king post wall with steel sheet infills for a retained height of up to 2.5m. Our team carried out trial auguring to establish a more accurate soil profile as well as determine the areas where traditional auguring was feasible to ensure that our client benefitted from early completion of critical sections on site.

Willerby Phase 2, Yorkshire

Our Role: Retaining Wall Contractor
Location: Willerby, Yorkshire, UK

Aarsleff spent 7 days on a site in Willerby to deliver the second phase of a king post wall installation. The site was live with lots of third party activity. Careful logistical organisation was needed to work with Beal Homes and the groundworks contractor to complete the project safely, beating the target programme. Aarsleff returned to the site in 2023 to complete the third and final phase of the king post wall.
