Hampton Gardens Secondary School, Peterborough

DRIVING OF PILES FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL

Project Description

Scope of Works 323 No. 250/300mm Driven Precast Concrete Piles
Client Hampton Gardens Secondary School
Contractor Carillion
Construction period 28th March 2016 – 22nd April 2016

Hampton Gardens is a brand new secondary school which is
due to open in September 2017 and will serve the communities of
Yaxley, Cambridgeshire and Hampton, Peterborough. The school
will eventually accommodate 1200 students in Years 7-11 and 300
Post-16 students.

Aarsleff was awarded the ground engineering contract on
behalf of main contractor Carillion to provide the driven piling
foundations to support the main buildings. When complete, the
school will include some outstanding facilities including a 3G All Weather sports pitch, Amphitheatre and an impressive Learning
Resource Centre which features a full height glazed wall.

Using its own Banut 700, Aarsleff installed 323no 250/300mm
square precast concrete piles of 16m driven into very stiff
ground. Due to the hard clay and the majority of made ground
consisting of Pulverised Fuel Ash Fill (PFA), Aarsleff carried out
Dynamic Load Tests before commencing with main piling works
in order to take into account the negative skin friction in regards
to pile capacity.

Aside from the main school facilities, the community will also
benefit from Hampton Gardens’ Sports Hall, Drama and Dance
Studio and the external sports facilities
