North Shields Metro Bridge

DESIGN EFFICIENCY AND OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE CREATES PROGRAMME SAVINGS ON NIGHT SHIFT PROJECT

Project Description

Data  9 GU8 sheet piles
Client  G&B Civil Engineering
Type of contract  Design and build contract
Construction period  January 2024

Continuous improvement to our traffic infrastructure is key to ensuring safe journeys around the country. In January, in North Shields, Aarsleff were contracted by G&B Civil Engineering Ltd to install 9 sheet piles to mitigate potential issues at the Metro Bridge. The works were carried out at night under limited possession to reduce impact on the surrounding area, including a nearby industrial facility.

In total, 9 GU8 sheet piles were installed at 8m lengths with a Movax operating on rubber mats. Designed in-house by Aarsleff’s experienced design engineers, the solution was based on the lightest possible section size to ensure minimal vibration occurred during installation of the piles. This also helped to reduce the overall programme of the works, which were carried out over 2 night shifts.

One of the key factors of the project was the need to work night shifts and the optimisation of the time around this. By utilising the conditions of the possession carefully, we were able to carry out all ancillary activities outside of the possession timeframe to allow for quick and effective operations once piling could begin. Mobilisation, site inductions, all plant maintenance, and rig setup were completed before the possession commenced, and so when piling could begin, we were able to work efficiently. This combined with the design savings reduced the overall programme of the project from 5 night shifts, down to 2.

Speaking on the project, Zohaib Khan, Project Manager, said, “The delivery team played a crucial role in adhering and effectively utilising the restrictions of the possession. Due to optimising on the logistics and planning with careful provisions, Aarsleff made huge savings on programme by completing the works in only 2 night shifts.”

By reducing the overall programme of the project, Aarsleff has allowed G&B Civil Engineering to commence their follow on works ahead of their overall programme, delivering value to the end client. This combination of effective design and efficient operations is the type of operational excellence Aarsleff strives for in all we do, delivering real value savings for our clients.
