Probe Drilling for M6 Smart Motorway

Drilling and grouting contractor Aarsleff Ground Engineering were appointed in November 2019 by Seddon Construction Ltd to deliver a mineshaft treatment package that formed part of a wider housing development scheme to include 63 plots. Two mineshafts required treatment and capping prior to constructing the residential building on the site.

Aarsleff utilised a shaft frame and one drilling rig for treatment of both shafts by sinking 3 probe holes into two shafts to 20m bgl (10m below the mud stone horizon) and infilling with 10:1 PFA/OPC using ascending stage grouting technique. (68No. 10m long nominal 75mm diameter holes utilising consolidation grouting).  Aarsleff then drove validation holes, which included one hole per shaft drilled after the main works had finished to confirm the shafts had been successfully grouted.
