The Redditch Gateway development extends to approx 78 acres and is strategically located on the eastern fringes of Redditch approx 2.5 miles from the town centre. The new development aims to promote and enhance supply chain links and to further develop the skills of the local labour market. Set to deliver up to 2,300 jobs to the area as well as an increase in economic growth, the development will comprise high-quality manufacturing and distribution facilities.
Main contractor Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd, on behalf of property developer Stoford and a major online retail client, awarded Aarsleff Ground Engineering the contract to install total 52.5l/m retaining wall at the site’s boundary to facilitate the construction of a massive warehouse complex with docking bays for 121 heavy goods vehicles, parking for 127 more, 475 car park spaces and 3 bus stops.
Aarsleff utilised a hybrid king post wall solution to allow the developer to make maximum use of available space on site, particularly important for a commercial development. King post walls are simple, quick, and economical, often deployed when hard ground conditions dictate, to offer a cost-effective earth retention system, used as either a permanent or temporary solution. Between the steel profiles, in-fill panels are inserted using a variety of materials, including steel sheet piles, which are generally lighter than concrete panels and can be extracted for reuse. The latter infill is what was used for Aarsleff’s retaining wall here at Redditch Gateway.
