Driving Steel Tubular Piles in Guernsey

Driving steel tubular piles for a new office block on the Isle of Guernsey.

Guernsey is the second largest of the Channel Islands with an area of 24 square miles and a population of approximately 63,000 people. The island is located 75 miles south of Weymouth in England and 30 miles west of France’s Normandy Coast.

Aarsleff Ground Engineering were awarded the piling works by one of Guernsey’s longest-established building contractors, Rihoy & Son, for the construction of a new 4-storey office block and 4-storey steel frame car park. The site, which is based off Elizabeth Avenue in Admiral Park, will also feature Guernsey’s first Premier Inn hotel, along with a new restaurant and private office spaces.

Aarsleff supplied, handled and installed 331No. 178Ø thick walled steel tube piles to average of 8m lengths. The steel tubes, which are recycled from offshore oil and gas platforms, along with Aarsleff’s Junttan PM16 were shipped out from Portsmouth in mid-November, arriving in Guernsey on time to commence the piling works.

Aarsleff’s Senior Contracts Engineer Simon Cottington who oversaw the piling works said,

“It has been an interesting project, especially as it was the first time Aarsleff has worked in Guernsey. A lot of preparation was done beforehand, including a full service of our Junttan piling rig to reduce the risk of having any issues when on site. We also made sure within our team there we had a plant fitter and service parts available to keep our piling rig maintained if the machine broke down.”

Aarsleff were able to complete the works within the set programme and successfully return its equipment and team back to UK mainland before Christmas.
