PLANNING AND COMMUNICATION DELIVERS OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE FOR TEMPORARY WORKS EDUCATION PROJECT IN SOUTHAMPTON

Project Description

Data 120 steel sheet piles to form cofferdam
Client  Farncombe Construction
Type of contract  Design and build contract
Construction period  October 2023

Climate change adaptation is an important part of the construction industry’s role in our evolving world. These projects take many different forms from full infrastructure upgrades to small storm management projects across the UK. Towards the end of 2023, Aarsleff Ground Engineering installed 120 sheet piles to form a cofferdam to facilitate the installation of a storm attenuation tank within the University of Southampton campus.

During a large storm event, attenuation tanks collect and store excess surface water run-off. Water is then released from the storage tank at a controlled rate, usually by a flow control, which slows down surface water run-off before releasing it into local waterways like rivers or reservoirs, thus minimising localized flooding risks. Cofferdams are often required during their construction to control groundwater and establish safe water infrastructure to ensure safety for workers as well as maximum output of the tank.

Working for Farncombe Construction Limited, Aarsleff installed 120 sheet piles to 10m depth to form the cofferdam over a period of 12 days. As the site was within the university campus, there were complicated delivery access restrictions and restricted working room to ensure minimum disturbance for university stakeholders. To ensure we were compliant whilst remaining productive, extensive planning and procedures were put in place. These made it easier for all parties on site to understand the delivery plan and enable productivity across all site workers.

Value was added through the use of Aarsleff’s existing stock of sheet piles which enabled us to provide a highly competitive price along with a fast mobilisation due to negating the need for procurement lead-ins.

Speaking on the project, Project Manager, Zohaib Khan, said, “An interesting and challenging project for Aarsleff which required intensive planning provisions to ensure that the works are delivered safely. A remarkable team effort, robust product, efficient design, and satisfied client. A great example of operational excellence and service provided by AGE.”
