Norman Chapel, Durham

Location: Durham Castle, Durham, UK

From December 2022 to January 2023, Aarsleff delivered a piled solution to allow a 5m depth of soil to be removed from the walls of Norman Chapel in Durham. We developed a cantilevered contiguous bored pile wall using 450dia SFA piles. The wall stretched 17 metres with a retained height of 5m.

Working within a UNESCO World Heritage Site meant the solution had to be low vibration, exclude hot works, could not touch or clash with the building and could only employ small plant capable of accessing the working area. This very restricted access meant we had to cane a mini piling rig over the castle wall to cross a temporary bridge and then track around the Castle motte.

Location: Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, UK

Aarsleff were appointed in July 2019 to deliver a geotechnical works package as part of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor project on behalf of the Client Sunderland City Council.

A significant number of retaining structures including 85m of contiguous bored pile retaining wall, 65lm retaining wall founded on CFA piles, a 250m long x 12m high Soil Nail wall and a large King Post Retaining wall encapsulating the existing 10m high retained wall pinned with ground anchors, were necessary to create space for the highway between the Pallion Shipyard and the upper existing highway and Tyne & Wear metro line.

Location: Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK

In 2018, Aarsleff completed the multidisciplinary foundations package at Saxton Gardens, on behalf of main client Leeds City Council for Vital Energi. We were awarded the driven steel tube piling, mini bored piling, king post wall and drilling and grouting works required for the network’s backup equipment at Saxton Gardens.

Our team installed 44No. driven steel tube piles, 16 No. mini bored piles installed inside a 4.5m height restriction, 45lin/m of King Post Wall to a retained height of 1.5m, and drilled 60No holes to 18m past the existing coal seam & filled with grout.
