INSTALLING A COFFERDAM FOR A NEW OUTFALL STRUCTURE INTO THE RIVER TRENT

Aarsleff Ground Engineering have completed on site
installing and extracting a sheet piled cofferdam on
Water Lane in Newark, as part of waste and water
improvements in the town. Severn Trent’s £60 million
investment to upgrade Newark’s sewerage and water
systems will help protect over 400 homes that are
currently at risk from flooding.
The project was Aarsleff’s fourth sheet piling contract on
the scheme, having previously installed sheet piles for a
cofferdam on Harcourt Street and two sheet piling projects
on Queens Road, all which were awarded and completed
within a two-year period.
Whilst on site, Aarsleff utilised their vibratory hammer
rig to install 254No. L605 temporary sheet piles of 10m to
form a cofferdam that extended into the river Trent. Before
commencing works, Aarsleff installed a temporary silt
curtain and oil boom around the working area in the river
to help protect the surrounding environment and prevent
any contaminate liquids and riverbed dirt drifting down
the Trent.
The works allowed the BNM Alliance to replace a new
outfall structure, along with repairing and relining the
current culvert that was situated underneath Water Lane.
Once the repairs and new outfall were finished, Aarsleff
returned to the site to remove the sheet piles, silt curtain
and oil boom.
Aarsleff’s Senior Technical Estimator Ashley Carter said,
“It is a great endorsement of Aarsleff’s work that we have
been awarded another contract for the same scheme in
Newark.”
“We have previously installed Cofferdam’s for the scheme,
but this one involved working over the River Trent,
retaining the water for Nmnc to replace a new outfall
structure.”
Aarsleff commenced sheet piling works at the beginning of
January, with the install taking 6-weeks to complete. The
extraction of the piles took place 5-weeks after installation
of the piles.
