Magnavale, Chesterfield

Ground engineering project in Derbyshire

Our Role: Ground Engineering Contractor
Location: Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK

Between April and June 2023, Aarsleff were contracted by IBO Construction Ltd to design and install a 200 linear metre soil nailed slope with a sprayed concrete ‘rigid’ facing and 40 linear metres of a king post retaining wall. The soil nails were installed on slopes excavated at 80° and up to 7m high. Our design engineers were faced with many complex design elements including assessment of rock stability, soil nail design, groundwater control, and producing high quality construction drawings.

Elan Aqueduct, Frydd Wood

Our Role: Ground Engineering Contractor
Location: Elan Valley Aqueduct, Wales, UK

Between July and September 2017, Aarsleff were contracted to design, supply and design a soil nailed slope to allow, with associated works, the launching of a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) for the Severn Trent Elan Valley Aqueduct Rehabilitation. With a Klemm 806 rig, Aarsleff installed 670no 100mm diameter fully galvanised R32 - 280 self-drilling soil nails of 6 to 16m in length. The soil nail wall had an estimated 1250m2 area to which Aarsleff supplied and fixed a steel mesh and geotextile facing. Aarsleff also sought value engineering primarily through optimisation of the soil nail layout and facing mesh.

Gibside SEN School, Gateshead

Our Role: Ground Engineering Contractor
Location: Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, UK

Between October and December 2019, Aarsleff carried out drilling and grouting
operations for the construction of a new state-of-the-art special needs primary school. Holes for drilling and grouting were spaced on a 4.25m staggered square grid, of which Aarsleff drilled 364 No. holes and mixed and injected 900 Tonnes of grout. 5% of the total number of holes drilled on the site were pressure tested and 4No. grout cubes were taken per day to ensure compliance. Aarsleff deployed its Klemm 806, Boart drilling rig and bespoke grout batching equipment for the works.

Esh Winning

Our Role: Ground Engineering Contractor
Location: Esh Winning, Durham, UK

For a duration of 8 weeks, Aarsleff worked on a housing development in the West of Durham. One of the main challenges our team faced on site was its location on top of an extensively worked coal seam. Aarsleff used their multi-discipline skills to overcome and efficiently carry out this work. Our team performed drilling and grouting at 390 positions across the site in order to stabilise the ground to support further development. Extra attention was needed to ensure that the correct amount of positions were drilled.

M6 Smart Motorway Improvements

Location: M6 Motorway, UK

From January 2019 to February 2020, Aarsleff were contracted by Costain to drill 2no. probe boreholes across the 11 mile stretch of the north and southbound motorway to establish any shallow coal mine workings that would require further treatment. Each hole was positioned to target the base of the new gantries to be constructed, with a total of 1294m of drilling carried out and 173m of temporary steel casing being installed. Aarsleff utilised its Klemm 806-3G and Casagrande C6XP-2 drilling rigs for the works.

IKEA, Newcourt Way

Our Role: Ground Engineering Contractor
Location: Exeter, Devon, UK

Between April and July 2017, Aarsleff were contracted to install soil nails for an new IKEA store. To provide a level platform, Aarsleff installed 1081no 32mm hollow self-drilling soil nails with a sacrificial drill bit to a 70° slope made up of Dawlish Sandstone, faced with a structural steel mesh cladded with a facing mesh and filled with a graded hardwearing local stone. Testing was carried out before the main works including the installation and testing of 6No test nails between 5m and 8m long. Aarsleff’s own Klemm 806 drill rig was used to install the soil nails.
