Mill House Leisure Centre

Location: Hartlepool, Durham, UK

Hartlepool’s Mill House Leisure Centre had been in operation since 1972, and the local council had recognised in recent years that it no longer possessed the capacity to support the town’s growing population. As a result, it was decided that funding would be allocated to create a new, purpose-built leisure centre at the Waterfront, with Wates Construction selected as the main contractor for the scheme.

The groundworks package comprised enabling works and foundations, including sheet piling and driven precast concrete piling. Aarsleff was appointed to deliver both aspects, with our team on site from February to April 2024. In total, 133 sheet piles were installed to form a cantilever cofferdam, and 476 driven precast concrete piles were installed to support the building’s foundation.

Selby Leisure Complex

Location: Selby, North Yorkshire, UK

Aarsleff completed foundation piling for the £6m Selby leisure complex in North Yorkshire. We drove 238 precast concrete piles, up to 20 metres long, to support the new Abbey Leisure Centre, replacing the one destroyed by fire in 2012.

Square-section piles of 200mm and 250mm, ranging from 16 to 17 metres in length, were driven into dense sands above mudstone to secure the foundation. Manufactured by Centrum Pile Ltd at their Newark facility, the units were produced using automated casting with self-compacting concrete, ensuring full traceability via barcodes.

Over four weeks, installation was carried out in line with a plan by Bradshaw Gass & Hope LLP and our own in-house team, utilising a Junttan PM20 machine with a 50kN/5 tonne accelerated hammer to achieve pile loads of 300-500kN. The site was prepared for efficient rig operation, and dynamic testing was completed afterwards.
