Redhills, Durham

Our Role: Mini Piling Contractor
Location: Redhills, Durham, UK

The Durham’s Miners Association Hall, known to the locals as Redhills, is an important beacon of the community for those living in and around Durham. However, the hall had been in disrepair and jeopardy for several years. In 2021, it was gifted back to the people through the Redhills charity, who have worked tirelessly to raise the funds to renew and restore the hall.

Between January and February 2024, Aarsleff were contracted to complete a contiguous pile wall as part of the extension works. In total, 40 450mm diameter sectional flight auger piles were installed to 9m depths to form the wall and a further 35 300mm diameter bearing piles were installed to 9m.

Norman Chapel, Durham Castle

Location: Durham Castle, Durham, UK

The Norman Chapel is Durham’s oldest building and is located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Castle. Aarsleff developed a piled solution to allow 5m depth of soil to be removed from the chapel walls and a ventilation system installed to remedy the problem. We completed a cantilevered contiguous bored pile wall using 450dia SFA piles. The wall stretches 17 metres with a retained height of 5m.

Working within a UNESCO World Heritage Site meant the solution had to be low vibration, exclude hot works, could not touch or clash with the building and could only employ small plant capable of accessing the area.

Gibraltar Rock, Tyne and Wear

Location: Kings Edward Bay, Tynemouth, North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, UK

Aarsleff were one of 8 contractors contacted by North Tyneside Council to provide a geotechnical solution to a failed cliff face at Kings Edward Bay.

Acting as the main contractor, we provided a two-staged solution to develop a scheme design that would provide a 120-year design life in remediating the failed slope. Stage 1 included the ground investigation works. Stage 2 required the installation of a contiguous piled wall, 10m in depth and 300mm in diameter mini piles, secured with a capping beam.
