Aarsleff commenced driven precast piling for the Bradford Mosque extension. They also demonstrated their ability to pile close to an existing building.
The Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam Grand Mosque in Bradford is a flagship Masjid and educational institute in the English city of Bradford, West Yorkshire. The mosque is also home to one of the largest chandeliers, falling with a length of 16m from the dome. Phase one of the construction programme for the New Community Centre Project has begun. Once complete, amongst other objectives, the centre will become the new home of STI School furthering the aim and commitment to providing lifelong learning and tarbiyah to everyone that walks through its door. The new extension, similar to the mosque itself, is funded purely by public donations.
Aarsleff Ground Engineering was called upon to install 120No. 750 kN driven precast concrete piles. Utilising their Junttan PMx22, the piles were 9m in length and 300mm square. Interestingly, Aarsleff Ground Engineering also piled the Mosque’s original foundations back in 1998. Over a 5-day period, Aarsleff demonstrated their ability to pile close to an existing building with the first pile driven in the footprint of the existing mosque steps. There were also a handful of piles that were within a metre of the mosque.
Aarsleff Ground Engineering respected the client’s wishes and worked on a programme that would allow prayers to continue as normal in the afternoon at 1 pm. Aarsleff drove their last pile in at 10 am, leaving plenty of time for the 2000 individuals to enter the mosque for prayer time.
