A specialist ground engineering contractor has been shortlisted in National Construction Awards for digitising construction and improving staff culture
Behind every great company are the people who make them what they are. As Construction News continues to champion values and diversity, the Construction News Talent Awards recognise the people striving to make it a more inclusive industry, as well as the businesses doing outstanding work to improve the construction industry’s reputation and employment practices. The awards includes individual as well as company awards for apprentices, graduates, health, safety and wellbeing, equality, diversity and inclusion – CN
Like so much in life and in business, the success and growth of the Aarsleff organisation wasn’t a happy accident. Instead regular communication, transparency and a proactive approach to staff development played their part, all of which has provided a unique culture on which the company’s employees continue to thrive in.
Aarsleff are therefore thrilled to announce that we have been shortlisted in two Awards at this year’s Construction News Talent Awards, the details of which are below:
Best Place to Work (Up to 300 employees)
This award recognises the UK construction companies most committed to providing an outstanding workplace environment for companies of up to 300 employees. Aarsleff were able to impress the judges in the first stages by demonstrating their commitment toward improving staffs wellbeing. They also provided several examples of their commitment to providing training opportunities for staff. Aarsleff’s senior leadership team have a clear vision in how to develop and enhance best practise by fostering an open and collaborative working environment. They encourage greater mentoring between young people and their leaders through the Group’s own leadership program titled ‘Young Talent’. In the past 12 months, the company have developed a clear strategy and vision whereby they are not looking for high percentage growth, but rather aiming to increase efficiencies across all departments of the business through collaboration and sharing of knowledge and ‘big data’.
Digital Team of the Year
This category recognises excellence among a digital team within a company which could be in charge of data management, design, or any part of the digitalisation of construction. Aarsleff partnered with 3D technology and software development studio Luminous Group to develop a new virtual reality application for the construction and ground engineering industry. The application shows the construction sequence of sectional flight auger in a residential basement, sheet piling for a car park, driven piling in an industrial zone, soil nailing adjacent to a railway and drilling and grouting operations in a traditional mining area. With half a million workers set to retire over the next 10 years, the VR application has been designed to address the growing skills shortage in the construction sector, with a view to help attract the next generation of digitally native gamers into the industry. Aarsleff’s Managing Director Kevin Hague said:
We’re seeing a lot of pressure on the skilled labour market. Why would someone go into a difficult marketplace that is uncertain? I think all companies suffer attracting good staff but our use of Virtual Reality is just one of the ways we are hoping to play a big part in challenging that
Aarsleff’s Group Marketing and Brand Manager also said:
While VR has been great for our clients, it has also been fantastic for the orientation of new starters at Aarsleff Ground Engineering. Research suggests that 50% of new starters do not have an onboarding experience that meets their needs. To address this, we ensured we created an inspiring and unified experience for all our new starts. The team at Aarsleff are constantly looking to integrate the latest technologies into our workflows. Through the virtual reality experience, new starters are immersed into our business and the techniques we offer from day one.
