As part of Aarsleff’s ‘Ground Beams’ week, we spoke with our Design Engineer Paul Lindsay.
Hi, Paul. First and foremost, where are you from?
I am from Manchester originally and have lived in Sheffield since 2004.
What is your role at Aarsleff Ground Engineering?
I am the design engineer for the ground beams division.
What are some of your main responsibilities?
I am responsible for the structural design of the ground beams and calculation of pile loads using the Principles of Structural Mechanics to prepare the structural analysis. Responsibilities include the Preparation of G.A.s and Pile Layouts for setting out and construction purposes, preparation of beam manufacturing details using 3D modelling techniques and calculation and preparation of all setting out information for the piling rigs and beam installation gangs. I am also responsible for assessing pile as built information and recommending remedial measures if required, advising the estimators regarding pile numbers, beam layouts, particularly on complex jobs for pricing purposes, if required and liaison with Local Authority Building Control, NHBC, the clients, consultants and management team on all aspects of the design.
What were you doing before coming to work at Aarsleff?
Prior to working here, I worked for two Consulting Structural Engineer Practices in Manchester for a total of 13 years working on the design of buildings such as office blocks, schools, residential, for the industrial, commercial and leisure sectors. I designed all building materials including the structural steelwork, timber, masonry and concrete. All building designs were for foundations an full superstructure up to roof level.
After that, I worked at Charcon, part of Aggregate Industries for 14 years. My role was the design of precast concrete structures. Designs included buildings within commercial, residential, industrial, leisure and sport. For the last 6 years of my employment at Charcon, I was the Groups chief design engineer.
What notable projects have you worked on?
I worked on the design of several prominent buildings such as the Olympic Velodrome, Edgbaston Stadium for Warwickshire Cricket Club and designed the precast structure for England’s first Passivhaus that was shown on Grand Designs!
What is your favourite part of your job?
The 1st Phase of the design which comprises the analysis, the General Arrangement and the pile layout. This is where all the thinking and the engineering takes place.
What do you like about the Centrum Ground Beam?
For me personally, it is the simplicity in the way the beams are connected together. When you see photographs of our beams installed, it looks very sleek.
And finally, for those who haven’t seen a Structural Analysis drawing…
