In February 2019, Aarsleff hosted a free online webinar with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) looking at the emergency repairs carried out to a section of the retaining wall outside the famous Gibraltar Rock Pub in Tynemouth.
Aarsleff’s Geotechnical Estimator Chris Purvis and Contracts Manager Jack Doran delivered the presentation together, with Chris providing background and design information and Jack discussing the installation of the solution and the onsite operations.
Some highlights from the presentation included:
- A background to the project, include the history and geology of the Tynemouth area
- The challenges and constraints of designing a retaining wall solution, including design life, construction programme and environmental and sustainability considerations
- A detailed insight into the construction of the new retaining wall, including a technical look at ground engineering techniques used, the method of demolishing the existing wall and the problems that occurred whilst on site
- The lessons learnt from the project regarding health and safety, effective project management, the technical challenges encountered and what could have been done differently
