Kevin Hague Autumn Message
Foundations contractor Aarsleff Ground Engineering and a Message from their Managing Director this Autumn

It’s becoming a tough period this autumn, as construction growth declines and decisions are delayed. It’s well understood that workload in recent months has rebounded from depressed levels after the late-winter freeze, however the most telling indicator is the uncertainty surrounding Brexit’s approach. It’s been evident to me that companies are becoming more averse to taking risks, as well as willingness to commit to new work, therefore we have been concentrating our efforts on learning new skills to adapt in this uncertain time. I guess in many cases it’s true what they say about leaders in today’s climate – “A warrior is defined by his scars, not his medals.” Indeed, these testing market conditions means we continually revisit our business strategy – which is a very good thing – and as we grow, our strategy needs to evolve to suit our new environment.

‘Complacency’ is my least favourite thing, and it’s crucial that we never assume success simply because we have been so in the past. In recent months, we’ve changed to suppliers who can grow with us and meet our new priorities, we’ve renegotiated contracts and ensured we’re up to date with new technologies, and even though it takes you out of your comfort zone, we’ve made some hard decisions too.

As a business we must always look forward, and the political climate has not dampened our investment plan. In piling, we have reduced the overall age of our fleet and added new instrumentation and laser technology to provide improved accuracy and better recording of pile driving data. We have also started the programme of upgrading the camera safety systems on our older rigs to improve the safety. In our Sheets department, we have purchased a new Volvo EC380L base machine to run our Movax 75 sheet piling hammer, alongside a DX-SP 25 Hammer attachment to be able to drive the sheet piles when encountering harder drives. Finally, in our Geotechnical department, we have recently taken delivery of our new Klemm 909 alongside a Putzmeister P11 concrete pump, and a new CX 4/10 Colloidal Mixer, expanding our current fleet and providing us with a wider capability for delivering geotechnical projects (drilling and grouting, soil nails and ground anchors).

Finally, if you hadn’t already seen, we have created a series of unique postcards specifically designed for our clients across the UK. Each postcard details a specialist ground engineering technique, their applications and advantages, and is complete with a picture-perfect photo from our own portfolio of projects. If you would like to receive your very own set, please email JessicaBanham@aarsleff.co.uk and we will send you a selection in the post. Thank you.
