Aarsleff, one of the UK’s leading foundation contractors, is pleased to welcome Neil Humberstone (l) and Simon Cottington (r) as its first recruits on its Graduate Training Scheme.

The Aarsleff Graduate Training Scheme has been developed in partnership with Nottingham Trent University and more recently Leicester De Montfort University, where it has exhibited at its 2015 “Internships, Placements and Graduate Careers Fair” (28th October 2015), to encourage bright new talent into the Company and help address the widely acknowledged and growing skills shortage in construction and in particular the geotechnical sector.

Chris Primett, MD Aarsleff said: “Recruiting employees with the necessary ‘key skills’ has become increasingly difficult for Aarsleff, so we took the decision to establish our own programme and develop the talent we need to take the Company forward.”

Neil and Simon both graduated from Nottingham Trent University with 2:1 BEng Civil Engineering degrees and during their year-long Graduate Programme they will have the chance to work in all business areas of Aarsleff, including estimating; contracting; design; health & safety and production.

Allowing graduate exposure to all areas of the business will provide the graduates with a good knowledge base in how Aarsleff and geotechnical businesses in general work. They will also have the opportunity to work on their own projects with support and guidance from Aarsleff’s experienced senior staff, with a view to being offered opportunities for permanent positions.

Chris added: “The shortage of skilled people is extremely worrying, not just for those involved in the Construction Industry, but for the wider economy. As fragile as the UK’s economic recovery is, it needs many talented people at all levels as well as a flow of new people to ensure it doesn’t falter. Establishing out own scheme is only a small effort, but we hope it is enough to inspire other companies to follow suit and establish the same or similar schemes.”

Having worked successfully with Nottingham Trent University and Leicester De Montfort University, Aarsleff plans to work with other educational establishments to widen the talent pool and the number of opportunities available to civil engineering graduates.
