Vertical and Raked Piles installed in Reykjavik, Iceland for new residential development
Aarsleff Ground Engineering, one of the UK’s leading contractors of driven precast piles and geotechnical solutions, has completed a project in Reykjavik, Iceland, driving vertical and raked piles for a new residential development.
Istak were the contractors for this project and are one of Iceland’s leading civil engineering and construction contracting firms. Istak were acquired by Aarsleff in 2015 allowing for Aarsleff to enter into new markets in Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
In order to drive the piles, Aarsleff Ground Engineering transported one of its Junttan PMx22 rigs from the UK. Furthermore, they installed piles manufactured and delivered by its sister company Centrum Pile in Sweden, demonstrating Aarsleff’s ‘one company’ approach of cross collaboration within the Aarsleff Group. During the 9 days on site, a total of 267No. piles of 270mm square section were driven. Interestingly, another specification for this project was to have a number of piles raked at 10°. This required good coordination and planning to run smoothly and efficiently whilst on site.

Raking piles is a technique that can be used in combination with vertical piles to provide stiffness against lateral forces, commonly associated with bridge abutments and other structures. Within the UK market, raked pile driving is not a common technique used in the UK civil sector. Aarsleff co-wrote a technical paper with the University of Sheffield that looks further into raking precast piles and both the benefits and misconceptions of using them in design.
