Selby Leisure Complex

Foundation piling has been completed by Aarsleff for the new £6m leisure complex at Selby, North Yorkshire. Two hundred and thirty eight precast concrete piles were driven up to 20 metres for the new Abbey Leisure Centre that replaces the complex destroyed by fire in 2012.

Utilising square section sizes of 200mm and 250mm class D jointed piles ranging in length from 16 to 17 metres the piles were driven to found on the dense sands above the mudstone to secure the foundation structure for this new, multi-discipline leisure complex being built by Wates Construction for Selby District Council.

The Centrum Pile System of precast reinforced concrete piles installed by Aarsleff are manufactured by subsidiary company Centrum Pile Ltd at the state-of-the-art facility at Newark, Nottinghamshire. With headquarters in Denmark, the UK facility is one of four including Sweden and Poland which give a production capacity of 3.2 million metres of piles annually. Casting is a fully automatic process using bespoke machines designed by Centrum specifically for pile production with self-compacting concrete which does not require vibration. Detailed mix and product data records are maintained for full product traceability, which can be seen on each pile’s barcode reference.

Piles are manufactured in sizes from 200 x 200mm up to 450 x450mm in lengths from 4 -15metres with the high-grade steel reinforcement being incorporated during fabrication.

The four week piling programme was carried out to a position plan developed by Bradshaw Gass & Hope LLP of Bolton and Aarsleff’s own in-house team. The piling-power was provided by a Junttan PM20 machine with 50kN/5 tonne accelerated hammer from Aarsleff’s own fleet and pile loads of 300KN to 500KN were achieved across the site. The site was prepared to provide a clear, supporting surface to facilitate easy positioning of the piling rig and dynamic testing was carried out on completion of the operation.
Dan Broadley, the Aarsleff project manager for the Selby site, confirmed that the operation went according to plan. “In fact we were able to cut the project time by 4 days as the conditions were exactly as predicted from the test piles. The ground was consistent across the site and we were able to drive accurately to within 75mm on each point. The main contractor was able to commence foundation construction work early which is always a bonus.”

Steve Hart, Project Manager for Wates Construction complemented the Aarsleff team on the job. “The piling job was spot on. The design was excellent and the production was first class. I was very impressed with the Aarsleff operation and will be happy to use them again when we need piling for a project in the future.”
