Aarsleff installed more than 200 precast concrete piles to form the foundation for a new commercial property extension to a production facility in Hull.  The programme allowed for a 14 day application but the Aarsleff team achieved the project in just eight days which certainly created a good impression on main contractor Sewell Construction Limited.

The project required 205 precast concrete piles to be installed and the programme included a number of piles in very close proximity to the existing building. This was carried out with minimal disruption to the production operations which were not delayed. The pile log included 200mm x 200mm and 250mm x 250mm piles driven to a maximum depth of 13metres by the Junttan PM20 piling rig from Aarsleff’s own extensive fleet. Piling loads of 150KN to 250KN were achieved.

The Centrum Pile System of precast reinforced concrete piles installed by Aarsleff were manufactured by subsidiary company Centrum Pile Ltd at the state-of-the-art facility at Newark, Nottinghamshire. With headquarters in Denmark, the UK facility is one of four including Sweden and Poland, which give a production capacity of 3.2 million metres of piles annually.

Casting is a fully automatic process using bespoke machines designed by Centrum specifically for pile production with self-compacting concrete which does not require vibration. Detailed mix and product data records are maintained for full product traceability, which can be seen on each pile’s barcode reference.

Piles are manufactured in sizes from 200 x 200mm up to 450 x450mm in lengths from 4 -15metres with the high-grade steel reinforcement being incorporated during fabrication.

Jon Harris, project manager for Aarsleff, was able to bring special local knowledge to bear. “We were already aware of the local ground conditions from previous projects and once we had satisfactory test results we were able to use shorter piles for the lighter loaded piles and complete the job in less time. In addition we were able to adapt the original plan on-site to implement an eleventh-hour change in the piling scheme to benefit the construction programme.”
