Anchored Sheet Piled Retaining Wall installation in St. Albans

Aarsleff Ground Engineering have recently completed the installation of a retaining wall for a new retail development of Griffiths Way, St. Albans.

Based on the former Nation Grid gas works site, the £9 million retail park will provide the town with a wide range of shops to choose from, including a DIY store, food and non-food stores and a wide range of parking.

Aarsleff were awarded the contract by MCS group for the installation of a retaining wall to support the existing embankment at the back of the site.

Commencing works at the beginning of October, Aarsleff utilised its ABI TM17 rig to install the 200no. 700mm AZ18 sheet piles using the latest variable moment hammer – MRZV 25VV – which can generate a maximum of 1350kN centrifugal force. The pile positions were also pre-bored with Aarsleff’s ABI TM17 to break through a band of stiff clay and allow for a smoother drive of the sheet piles.

Once the sheet piled wall was in place, Aarsleff then installed 27no. ground anchors using their new Casagrande C6 XP-2 drilling rig. The anchors were installed to hold back the sheet piled wall at its highest point and prevent movement from the embankment. To finish the wall construction, Aarsleff also installed a bespoke capping beam on top of the sheet piled wall to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Aarsleff’s construction manager Jim Wilson who oversaw the project said,

“This project has been a great showcase, not only for our new Casagrande C6 drilling rig, but also showcasing our capability in delivering a multi-discipline solution from a single specialist contractor. We were able to bring all three elements together, of which all of them were delivery on time and to our clients programme.”

Aarsleff completed the works on 6th November, having been on the site for a total of 6-weeks.
